Homestays

Bienvenidos!
We've finished our homestays! The group consensus is that language barriers became no problem, even the Latin and French students began to pick up Spanish after initial apprehension and awkward attempts at body language using flailing limbs. The way of life here is very different from the states. The families in Tres Equis have no air conditioning, no hot water, and very few materialistic things. At first, I felt bad because I wanted them to have the leisures we have in the states. But, after watching the family for two days (and a shower that left my lips blue), I realized that they are very happy with their simplistic way of life. Simplistic does not necessarily mean poor, because in terms of the relationships amongst the community, the people in Tres Equis are much richer than us.

We've arrived at the beach, and spent the rest of the day playing ultimate frisbee and soccer. Mr. Simpson and I even joined a volleyball game on the beach, and I met some players from Germany, a college student from California, and a vacationer from New York.
We lost. Badly. But it was fun!
Tomorrow promises a busy day in the rainforest and sea kayaking. It's getting late!
